TN-birders, Recent discussion regarding the upcoming Christmas Bird Count (CBC) season lead me once again to wonder why there isn't a CBC around the Pace Point area. This is one of Tennessee's premiere winter birding locations, so it just didn't make sense that this area should go uncovered during the CBC season. Well, I intend to correct this problem. Mike Todd and I have begun a collaboration that I hope will bring a long-standing CBC to the Pace Point area. Unfortunately, it is already too late to officially propose a new count for the upcoming CBC season. We see this as an opportunity to use this year to conduct a trial run. It just so happens that Saturday, December 13 is one day outside of the official count period so no other counts will be run on that day. We therefore propose a trial run for the new Pace Point CBC on Saturday December 13 and invite everyone who is interested in the success of this CBC to participate. If you would like to join us, please send me an e-mail stating your willingness to do so. As routes are finalized Mike and I will assign everyone an area. Both Mike and I would especially like to solicit input from birders familiar with the area and extend a special invitiation to those individuals to join us. The great thing about a CBC in this area is that there won't be any "bad" routes. All routes will have plenty of access to water and other habitats giving everyone who participates an opportunity to generate a good species list. A count in this area will provide high counts for many species in Tennessee and compete for one of the highest species totals in the state. If any of this sounds good to you please think about joining us on Dec. 13th. We realize that there are other counts in western and middle Tennessee for which a Pace Point CBC may compete for observers. We are sensitive to this, but feel that as long as the count is NOT conducted on the first Saturday in the count period that we will avoid most conflicts. If anyone has any concerns regarding competition for observers I would be happy to hear them. Finally, even if you are not able to join us on Dec. 13 we would like to hear from you if you think this count is a good idea and you would consider participating in the future, or if you think this is a horrible idea let us know. We realize that the success of this count will require that we draw people from outside of the immediate area, meaning that the count will have to provide sufficient draw to west Tennessee and Nashville birders. If birders from these areas are not interested in another count, then that information would be extremely helpful. I'm looking forward to your replies and feedback. Good Birding!
