Big Sandy/Pace Point area
Henry/Benton Co.
8/21/03

This is more a note about conditions than about birds seen. I made a
quick trip up to Pace Point after work yesterday morning, and as
expected with current lake levels there was NO shorebird habitat. My
time was short, but I didn't even see a Killdeer. The at times excellent
Lick Creek flats are still totally inundated. This is the highest I
remember water levels being this late in the summer over the last few
years. Looking at predicted water levels over the next few days, it
appears that they are hopefully about to start a drawdown.

All that was present on the Point were well over 100 Ring-billed Gulls
and at least 20 Caspian Terns, including several crisp juveniles. One of
the young Caspians gave me a brief moment of excitement, flashing almost
an unmarked white forehead and slightly paler bill. Otherwise though, it
was all Caspian. There were no smaller Terns around, and though this is
a great spot for Laughing Gulls (I had a juvie Laugher here 8/22 of last
year), none were in the mix. A few Great Blue Herons and several
DC-Corm's rounded out Pace Point.

Good birding!!
