Yes, Eastern Wood-Pewee would certainly be unusual given the date, so I would
not give up on the bird just yet. As Stefan suggests the thing to do now (asap)
is to see if it will respond vocally. Use playback for both birds and record
what you hear. If you have trouble finding the bird again I would use E.
Screech-Owl. You might bring in others of interest! Since this is winter and
both birds are Code 1 I have no ethical issues with using playback. Good luck!

Subject: [TN-Bird] Re: Pewee Still At The Honors Course In Ooltewah
Hi David,
Unfortunately, visually identifying Eastern vs Western Wood-Pewee on an
out-of-range/date individual will most likely be unsatisfying. I would
encourage anyone to record any vocalizations: it may respond to playback.
Otherwise, it's best left as Eastern/Western Wood-Pewee.
Best birding,
Stefan

Yesterday I reported seeing an Eastern Wood-Pewee for the second time after
what would be considered past the normal late date to see one (Nov. 16 was the
fist time). Today I went back, the bird was still there and I got pictures.
Apparently the picture file is too big as tn-bird would not even allow one
picture to be attached (I kept cutting back from 4 pics). I have four decent
ones I can send to individuals wanting take a look.
I first ran them by Chris Sloan to make sure my ID was not crazy. His
answer back was "Wow. That's a hell of a record. It's definitely a pewee.
Honestly, it's so out of season, I am not sure you can rule out Western
Wood-Pewee".
When I posted last month Scott Somershoe said the record late date for
Tennessee was Nov. 20. Someone on tn-bird reported seeing one in Kingsport on
Dec. 7 this year. Now, is it an Eastern Wood-Pewee or an Western Wood-Pewee?
If anyone wants to try and see it tomorrow I am willing to go with you between
12:30 and 3:00 PM. The golf course is closed every winter.
