Shelley, Congratulations on a great bird. Summer Tanagers are known to overwinter in some strange places. A look through the winter season reports of North American Birds any year will find a few reports from bizzare places like Ontario, Michigan or Pennsylvania. I don't recall any recent reports of Summer Tanager overwintering in our area but there is a record for Knoxville from 21 Dec 1969 during the Knoxville CBC. There's only a handful of others across the state. It would be good to photograph and document your bird. And speaking of the Knoxville Audubon Christmas Bird Count, it is coming up on Sat, 30 Dec. Would you mind responding to me directly (off list) at kde@xxxxxxx or 865-660-9701 to see if you live in the area that the count covers? Would obviously love to have your bird recorded on the count if it hangs around that long.
