I didn't do much bird watching while my family spent this past week hitting several wildflower areas in the park. I did get to enjoy a Common Raven during a family picnic at The Chimneys picnic area. This is the second time in three years I have seen a raven at this mid-elevation location. From its behavior, I think he has adapted well to human behavior, i.e. working around various picnic sites looking for scraps/handouts. I don't know how many Great Blue Heron nests have been found within the park boundary, especially outside of Cades Cove. On Sunday, we stopped at The Y near Townsend and saw a Great Blue Heron attending a nest in the top of a dead snag on the northeast side of the rivers' confluence. Damien Simbeck Killen, AL
