There have been lots of reports of Red-breasted Nuthatches from NC and KY this fall and today (26 Sept 2012) they finally made it to our house on Black Oak Ridge in west Knox Co. I heard and then saw 2-3 first in our neighbors' pines then they worked their way down to our woods. A few other notes from recent days, all at home... Red-headed Woodpecker, 1 immature on 20 and 23 Sept Thrushes: Big nocturnal movement with lots of calls heard overnight on 22-23 Sept with Veery, Gray-cheeked, Swainson's, and Wood Thrush heard calling as they passed overhead in decent numbers, especially just before dawn. All but Veery were also seen later that day (23 Sept) feeding on Black Gum. Gray-cheeked Thrushes have made a good showing in the Black Gums this fall with sightings on 13, 19, 21-23, 26 Sept. Another 3-thrush day (Swainson's, Gray-cheeked, Wood) today (26 Sept) Bay-breasted Warbler, 24 Sept, first of fall Rose-breasted Grosbeak, 21 Sept first of fall, good numbers of nocturnal migrants heard on the mornings of 23 and 25 Sept.
