Some odds-and-ends... I've been in warbler withdrawal for a couple of weeks now so I was pleasantly surprised to hear and see a young male American Redstart working the woods in the backyard during the morning dog walk today (Thurs, 31 May). While checking out the Redstart, I glimpsed something fly in and land on a limb in one of our dead blackgum trees. I got the binocs on it expecting a hummingbird but instead it was an Appalacian Snaketail (dragonfly), a rather unexpected first for the yard. Speaking of dead Blackgums, over the past two years we have had at least 4 mature Blackgums die in our woods, most recently the huge male tree that has been such a great bird magnet -- even in death it pulled in an Olive-sided Flycatcher a few weeks ago. We still have several Blackgums left but I don't know for how long. Anyone seeing something similar or know of a disease or insect that is a waging war on Blackgums? On a happier note, as Carole Gobert mentioned earlier this week, our Black Cherry trees have had a banner year. Unfortunately, the squirrels are not giving the birds much of an opportunity to take advantage of it.
