4/30/08 Reelfoot Lake & Mississippi River areas of Obion, Lake, Dyer Co I spent most of the day yesterday birding with Jared Barnes. We had a total of 135 species, not too bad, considering the overall lack of shorebirds, and nothing rare at all. We started on Walnut Log Rd, which was as good as I've seen it in a long time. There were warblers singing and moving the length of the road. Walnut Log produced 21 species of warblers, with 4 more later in the day. Warblers for the day: Blue-winged Warbler: FOS (at least 3 males singing on Walnut Log) Tennessee Warbler: singing everywhere throughout day, at least 20 on Walnut Log alone Nashville Warbler: 2 singing on Walnut Log Northern Parula Yellow Warbler Chestnut-sided Warbler: FOS (2 males on Walnut Log) Magnolia Warbler: FOS (1 male on Walnut Log) Yellow-rumped Warbler: most abundant warbler of the day, by far Black-throated Green Warbler: 4 on Walnut Log Yellow-throated Warbler Pine Warbler: (not seen at Reelfoot, stopped near home and got it) Prairie Warbler: (also not at Reelfoot, found near home) Palm Warbler: (several singing during day) Bay-breasted Warbler: FOS (one singing male on Walnut Log) Blackpoll Warbler: FOS (several singing over course of day, at least 5 on Walnut Log) Cerulean Warbler: NOT SEEN, they aren't back at their usual spot this year on WL Black-and-white Warbler Prothonotary Warbler Swainson's Warbler (1 singing on Walnut Log) Ovenbird (1 singing on Walnut Log) Northern Waterthrush (6 on Walnut Log) LA Waterthrush (1 on Walnut Log) Kentucky Warbler Common Yellowthroat Hooded Warbler (not seen at Reelfoot for some reason, found close to home) Yellow-breasted Chat Other highlights from Walnut Log were a Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, FOS Swainson's Thrushes (several) and a lingering Hermit Thrush. Rose-breasted Grosbeak and Least Flycatcher were also FOS birds for me here today. We would add 2 more Least Flycatchers (in KY) on the day. Acadian only other empid of the day. Eastern Wood-Pewees were vocal. Haven't seen or heard a Cuckoo yet, except for a overhead line casualty we found yesterday. We then made our way around the top end of the lake. Shorebird habitat is drying out very fast, especially since many of the traditionally good areas were worked over the last couple of dry years, with improved drainage. The Phillipy Pits/Ibis Hole area is still very much inundated, so hopefully will offer some late season shorebirding. The areas on the Great River Rd where Jeff and I had good birds less than 2 weeks ago are almost completely dry now, only Hurd Loop Rd (Dyer Co) offered any birds yesterday. I didn't make it down farther south on the Great River Rd, where there probably is still some habitat. Only 9 species of shorebirds were seen: American Golden-Plover (2 groups of about 30 birds, both in Dyer Co) Killdeer Black-necked Stilt: (1 group of 10 birds resting together, Dyer Co) Greater Yellowlegs Lesser Yellowlegs (no large groups of either Legs) Solitary Sandpiper Pectoral Sandpiper Long-billed Dowitcher (6 in Dyer Co) I'm sure we overlooked some Least somewhere, but it was tough! Great Egrets were numerous, but we only saw 2 small herons all day, 2 adult Little Blues. The Lake itself was pretty dead, with several Ring-bills flying around, and about 6 Forster's and 1 Common Tern. One Caspian was also on a distant log, and they were seen 2 other times on the day, sitting in flooded fields. No Least or Black Terns. Dickcissels are in pretty good numbers already, but I was surprised by not seeing or hearing any Bobolinks, though we didn't spent much time on the levees. Grasshopper Sparrows were buzzing from several locations. A Mississippi Kite soaring over the south unit of Black Bayou was also a FOS bird. Great day to be out, even if shorebirding was considerably shower than I had anticipated!
