This week has probably brought a departure to aff my fall adult male Ruby Throats. I have not seen one since Monday afternoon, Sept. 20th. On Monday I saw at least two different individuals (adult males). My hummingbird population has been way up all summer. It has been a delight to see so many. I am guessing that I had nearly a hundred on our property. I know that I had at least fifty at a time seen in our back yard from the patio. I have had at least fiften race past me while I'm sitting on the patio, with some feathers brushing my face and body. I've never had that happen before. This year I planted four Pineapple Sage Plants (huge - with hundreds of red blossoms), I have six Orchid Cactus with huge red blossoms. And I keep nine feeders filled with nectar. The hummingbirds didn't care for the three flats of slavia I planted on the raised patio bed. I will miss these babies when they leave. I'm hoping my female Rufous from last year will return and stay for the winter. She was a delight. Wouldn't turn down any other visitors, either.
