Today 4-26-02 while looking for GoldenWing Warblers in extreme NE Campbell County and Clairborne County strip mine areas, I was shocked to HEAR an unmistakable SANDHILL CRANE near an area of large fields and wetland beaver habitat with cattails and marsh grasses. I could NOT find the bird, but he called intermittently several times. Since my experience with these birds have proved they can be heard from quite a distance, he may have been quite distant, or even flying over. It was near the little community of Westbourne/ Gazateer pg. 59-NE Quad.(near the top of the page) I have GPS reading if anyone interested. ( NE TN. near KY border) I also had Spring firsts/ Chat/ and ACADIAN FLYCATCHER near this same area. I heard and observed many other species, though I believe the cooler weather today had many of the birds quiet. I found NO Cerulean Warblers today, though I logged 263 miles from home and back (much of it in strip mine areas ) through Habersham/Morley/Eagan / Tackett Creek/White Oak/ Davis Creek and Clairfield areas.. I hope it was because of the cool temps. I could not believe not a single one was heard. The reward came at 5:00 this afternoon when FINALLY I found a pocket of Golden Wing Warblers near Clairfield, Tn Claiborne County in an abandoned strip mine area near Cooper Ridge. 3 birds were singing with habitat potential of many more.
