Ruben and I spent the day birding Kentucky Lake. Paris Landing had 1700
Common Goldeneye but the only interesting bird was a continuing
Red-throated Loon. I counted 2440 Canvasbacks in a huge flock on the Big
Sandy Embayment but still no Scoters to be found! Finally mid-afternoon at
the Pump Station DRU Ruben spotted a group of 6 Scoters way out, sleeping,
in bad lighting. We soon saw one flapping with White wing patches, and much
waiting and watching eventually proved the other 5 to be Surf Scoters. A
Red-throated Loon was seen off and on diving in the same area all
afternoon. Alan Troyer and Daniel Redwine both came out and got them as
well.
