This morning (21 Aug 2005) I surveyed the tall, wet grass at Seven Island Wildlife Reserve in SE Knox County to determine how many Sedge Wrens established territories in August. I was able to detect at least 5 territorial singing males in the field across the road from the house and barn beyond the horse stable. One seemed to have a female in his territory, but no sign of nesting. The birds can easily be seen from the road. This habitat consists of Big Blue Stem and Indian Grass about 6 feet tall, and was not used extesively by any other species for nesting throughout the summer (except a few Red-Winged Black Birds). Other species at SIWR... Ruby-throated Hummingbird (1) Osprey (1) Field Sparrow (5) Indigo Bunting (everywhere) Canada Goose (1) Jim Giocomo Knoxville, TN
