May 20, 2012 Shelby Co. TN Pretty interesting birding this week as migration waned. Saturday morning, as I left the house, I was offered "Quick Three Beers" from the top of my 130 year old cedar tree that bit the dust a few years back. The snag has attracted a lot of species over the years, and this the second Olive-sided that I've seen there. Saturday, at one location, full blooded Western Kingbirds, first and second generation hybrid females and a male Scissor-tailed Flycatcher were trying to work out nesting arrangements. I never figured out who was fighting whom but both hybrid females were on nests today and only a few hundred yards apart while another pair of Scissor-tails went about feeding young just down the road. Wood Ducks were trading young about as were Mallards and at least 3 pairs of Blue-winged Teal are hanging around but the 3 male Shovelers have left and the lone hen is now all her herself. I have not been able to determine if she is healthy Only 12 species of shorebirds were found on Saturday and that number down to only 10 on Sunday. Some interesting defending of nests sites and territories were witnessed and one mixed species encounter photographed.
