Sadly, there is also another possibility (though not saying it is the case 
here).  Maybe there is too MUCH publicity about efforts to save them.  
Instead of not knowing what the crane was, maybe some of these folks have 
known exactly what the crane was.  Some folks just don't like to have rare 
critters on their property.  The "Feds" might show up and try to take 
their land or tell them what they can and can't do on their own property.

There's lots of stories of folks shooting Red-cockaded Woodpeckers or 
cutting down nest trees on their property.  Kirtland's Warblers aren't 
that popular in parts of Michigan and don't even mention Piping Plovers on 
the Outer Banks.  A few years ago, there was a news story about a person 
in Florida that cut down a tree Bald Eagles were trying to nest in for 
fear of the government coming in and taking over.  I've asked property 
owners for permission to bird on their property and been denied because 
they were afraid of what might happen if I found something rare.

This fear exists and there are those who will take action because of it.
