The weather front that came through yesterday was good for setting some birds down. Several thousand shorebirds down at the pits (pit 4 has the biggest concentration, good looks from the north levee neer the covered pit). Saturday's Avocet is still in the central Blkbelly whs. duck area with a couple of Blknk stilts. Second Avocet found on pit 4 adult very curved beak still has some tan on neck. Total of 60 Blk Bellied whistling ducks this afternoon w/ some young tagging along, some little fuzzies and several that have fledged. Lots of whistling going on. Fulvous still present hanging out with the Blk bellies. Blk-necked Stilts are few and far between right now. Starlings in the thousands also. Some great color variations. 22 species Black-bellied Whistling-Duck 60 Most All the local birds were in one central area, some with young were still back in the woody brush pond that is holding good water amounts. Fulvous Whistling-Duck 1 Same bird hanging out with the Blk-bellied Whistling Ducks all summer. Canada Goose 5 Mallard 24 Northern Shoveler 17 First shovelers of the fall. Red-tailed Hawk 1 Flew in and hovered once and scattered the whole pit #4. Finally left and everybody settled back down into feeding, bathing and preening. Semipalmated Plover 2 Killdeer 300 It's a homecoming for these birds they were everywhere and thick as can be on 4 and 6. Black-necked Stilt 13 American Avocet 2 Saturdays bird still in the central area and a second bird Adult was on pit 4 in the deeper water feeding. Spotted Sandpiper 2 Solitary Sandpiper 3 Lesser Yellowlegs 2 Semipalmated Sandpiper 210 Probably more in with the thousands of Least on # 4. Western Sandpiper 17 Low number that I could actually determine before heat shimmer. Least Sandpiper 2500 This many and more most likely. Baird's Sandpiper 2 Two striking birds next to the other peeps just too far out to photograph though. Pectoral Sandpiper 200 At least this many in the big mixed flock. Stilt Sandpiper 9 Nice finds mixed in. Wilson's Phalarope 1 lone female feeding with the mixed flock. Mourning Dove 21 European Starling 1500 why count too many as usual, nice color variations.
