14 Sept 2006 Ensley Bottoms Area Memphis, Shelby County, TN Location: TE Maxwell Lagoons Observation date: 9/14/06 Notes: Numbers are down since beginning of week but still impressive. Starlings are starting to mass up in the fields, 200-500, in several big flocks. Several Starlings got themselves trapped in the muck in Pond 1. Majority of the Lesser Yellowlegs in the second big Pond in the back. Most other birds were mixed flocks of Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers with Pectorals mixed in. Rough estimate 750-1000 each of the little peeps. Pects (75) were mixed all around where the Yellow Legs were more grouped together. Most birds were grouped together in the middle to far side of the levee (No Scope) very few birds up close. No Raptors today. Birds were edgy today maybe they new something was watching that I didn't see. Several magnificent lift-offs of several flocks at a time. They would circle then land back where they started. Cool day 80-85 slight breeze. Number of species: 11 Canada Goose 24 Northern Shoveler 8 Northern Bobwhite 18 Great Blue Heron 3 Killdeer 35 Lesser Yellowlegs 46 Semipalmated Sandpiper X - 750-1000 Least Sandpiper X- 750-1000 Pectoral Sandpiper 75 Mourning Dove 30 European Starling X - 250-750 Location: TVA PONDS Observation date: 9/14/06 Notes: Huge flock of geese in the back of the lg pond mud flats, in fact most birds there, they took off going west and left about 8 in the pond with the rest of the birds that were staying the evening. Grt Egrets flying in to roost up till I left.
