Having a job that requires extensive travel outside the state of Tennessee can be hazardous to one's Tennessee state list. I know from experience. Because of my many trips, I have missed some birds that were within 2 or 3 miles of my home on the outskirts of Nashville. I recall a certain swan from about 3 years ago that showed up nearly in my back yard while I was in New Zealand. Then last November, while I was on a trip to Mexico, a BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD was banded within about 3 miles from my home but vanished by the time I returned. So it should not have surprised me that when I returned this past Tuesday from another meeting in Mexico, Chris Sloan had banded an ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD about an hour's drive from Nashville. Not waiting for possible bad weather on the weekend, I gave chase this morning. On my way to work I skipped past my usual Charlotte Ave. downtown exit in Nashville and headed east to Smith County. I arrived at the hosts' home and waited for about 15 minutes before the ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD showed up at the feeder. I was invited into the Harvilles' home and watched the hummer feed several times over the next 30 minutes. I searched a few minutes to try to find the bird's perch when not feeding but was unsuccessful. Nevertheless, I returned to Nashville with a good start to the day. Many thanks to the Harvilles for their hospitality.
