August 21, 2012 Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge - Duck River Unit Humphreys County, TN Got a little bit of a late start this morning arriving at the refuge around 8:30. Fairly quite with little activity around the Blue Goose auto loop. I did however see several Great Egrets, Great Blue Herons, Little Blue Herons, an immature Green Heron that I studied for some time finally ruling out American Bittern. Shorebirds were limited to several Killdeer and 2 Greater Yellowlegs. Also picked up 2 Osprey and an adult Bald Eagle along the river. Moving over to Pool 1 by the old pumphouse I picked up the flock of at least 8-10 American White Pelicans, several more Great Egrets, Great Blue Herons, Little Blue Herons, could not located the Tricolored Herons. Double-crested Cormorants and Caspian Terns were also numerous here along with a few Canada Geese. The bird of the day also was revealed here. At 10:30am while standing by the pumphouse I got a close range unobstructed view of a Peregrine Falcon. The Peregrine circled around me and continued off to the east out of view, an excellent ending to a cool morning on the "Duck". Stanley York Jr. Palmyra/Montgomery Co, TN
