The annual Spring Meeting of Tennessee Ornithological Society was held in
the Memphis area over the weekend, April 25 to 27, and in my opinion the
weekend
was a great success. TOS sends a big Thank You to all the Memphis chapter
members who helped out leading field trips and taking care of the many details
involved in hosting a state meeting.
Special thanks goes to Memphis chapt. president Dick Preston who was doing
most of the "heavy lifting", being everywhere making sure things were running
smoothly. Dick does things so well he got himself elected to another office:
Congratulations to TOS president-elect Dick Preston!

Field trips went out Saturday and Sunday to various local birding sites,
reports made on those separately. The Meeman Shelby Forest trip was well
attended on Sat. and "the Pits" trip well attended on Sunday. One of the most
in
teresting trips was to the Raptor Center run by TOS member Knox Martin.

The entire state was represented by TOS members attending, with the eastern
end being lightly represented, understandable with the travel distance and
gas prices these days. Saturday afternoon the Board of Directors met, with a
quorum of voting members present, and conducted much club business. Officers
and Committees made their reports, and a few motions were voted on. After
details were presented by Finance chair Ron Hoff and Treasurer Mac McWhirter
one
item of old business was concluded with the passage of a motion to purchase
liability insurance to cover TOS. The minutes of the entire meeting will be
published to the TOS web site in a few weeks and details of the meetings can
be viewed there.

Another item of business was presentations by TWRA Region 3 information
officer Dan Hicks on changes centering around the Hiwassee Refuge festival and
Sandhill Crane management in general. It wasn't exactly Daniel in the Lions
Den, but a lively discussion followed. I will report further on these items
and
the TOS response in another post. We thank Dan Hicks and Bruce Anderson for
their time and effort attending our meeting and weekend.

The Saturday night membership meeting was well attended. The food was good
and fellowship was great! Our state being so spread out, its good to get
together for some bonding time and see faces to put with names. We had an
excellent speaker and program with Dave Ziolkowski coming from Patuxent
Maryland to
report on the BBS, Breeding Surveys that many of us participate in. His
program was very interesting to all of us and he was very complimentary of
Tennessee's reputation in the birding community. He showed a long list of names
 of TN
BBS participants in 10+, 20+ and 30+ year categories. It was amazing that
some so young... ;-) could have put in 30+ years birding already! Chuck N. had
to correct that his was 33 not 32 years on the job!

We missed you if you were not there and hope to see you soon. Look for
announcements of future meetings (Fall probably in Chattanooga and Spring 09
probably in Nashville) and make plan to attend.

Thanks, and good birding,

RICHARD CONNORS
TOS President '07-'09
