22 February 2003 field directly behind Italian Village Restaurant 93 North Rufe Taylor Road Greeneville, TN Alice Loftin and I arrived at the field a little later than optimal this evening, with darkness almost totally on us and a thunderstorm and rain moving in. Within less than a minute after we got out of our car, we heard woodcocks peenting. Shortly thereafter, I heard the wing whurr and looked up just in time to glimpse a doodle high overhead right before a sheet of lightning blanketed the sky, the bird, and my strained but delighted eyes. I've never had a birding experience like this, and probably won't have one anytime soon, but it was a thing of wonder while it lasted. No shot of that good old mountain dew could touch it. Altogether, we counted at least three woodcocks before seeking cover and driving off.
