Jefferson county, 12/31/07, 2:30-5:30 PM
By car from Baneberry to Hwy 113, then S on Hwy 25/70, then across
I-40 to points on western shore
Douglas Lake elevation: 953.3 (up 9 ft. since late October)
I found the biggest concentration of birds halfway between Dutch
Bottoms and Swann Bridge. The lake is about a mile wide there, with
extensive shoals and mudbanks.
I didn't notice any uncommon species - there may have been some among
the mobs of gulls and waterfowl seen at a distance.
The egrets and sandpipers are unusual at this time of year.
A property owner at the end of Back Nine Rd. in Baneberry allowed me
to cross her yard to the lakeshore for a closer look at the shorebirds.

Partial list (mostly counting by 5s and 10s):
Canada goose (700+)
Mallard (160)
Green-winged teal (45)
Hooded merganser (20)
Wild turkey (5)
Great blue heron (120)

Northern harrier
Am. coot (4)
Killdeer (8)
Least sandpiper (105)
Dunlin (8)
Bonaparte's gull (150)
Ring-billed gull (1200)
Am. pipit (90)
