Here's the promised quick update on the banding at Whigg Meadow this fall. We started on the Saturday before Labor Day and although it is early in the migration, our captures are up probably 40-50%, part due to habitat work around the original nets and the addition of a few new nets. The new nets have been quite productive so far! Wednesday morning there was a large movement of Swainson's Thrushes (75+ heard around dawn) with a large number of warblers and vireos working around the meadow in the first couple hours of the day (before I left), including dozens of Tennessee's with smaller numbers of Black-thr Blue, Magnolia, Chestnut-sided, Black-thr Green, Blackburnian, Worm-eating, and Black-and-white Warblers, N. Parula, and Blue-headed Vireos. Carolina Chickadees and Tufted Titmice have been pretty regular this year as well (they are usually uncommon at Whigg). As I was writing, I got an update and apparently today was a very good day with a lot of captures, so our capture rate is probably up 60% so far for the season!! I'll be the bander at Whigg this coming Tues-Thurs. Also, the road is in excellent condition right now. As always, visitors are welcome and we can always use helpers (and it sounds like we need them)! Cheers, Scott Somershoe
