Cheatham Lake WMA Cheatham Co. TN On a Sunday (8/1/04) outing to Cheatham County, mostly for butterflies, Sarah Scott and I checked the Dyson Ditch area and found one adult Yellow-crowned Night Heron. It was hunting in a wet, partly flooded corn field, and caught and ate a crayfish as we watched. We could clearly see it's red-orange eyes as it walked away with a lump in it's throat. There were also 3 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS along the flooded edge. "Dyson Ditch" is on the north side, the Ashland City side of the lake. The similar area on the south side is known as Pardue Pond and when I checked my place names reference, Mike Bierly's book Bird Finding in Tennessee, I noticed his entry about Dyson Ditch included: "This is the best area for Yellow-Crowned Night Heron, summer, look wet areas..." The Cheatham Co. butterflying was fair to good with 21 species for the day, the best of which was my 2nd Golden-banded Skipper in two weeks. The dragonflies were thick in the Dyson Ditch area but not enough time spent there do them (or the birds either) a proper survey with 6 of the "usual suspects" identified.
