Steve might know. Off the top of my head I’m not sure. I think the editor
wasn’t platform specific - I thought that’s what the kernal was for.
I have a 4032 without a crtc chip or piezo, but does have basic 4.0. I could
plug a speaker in and test it.

What ROM would you use? Is there a $E version that beeps but does not use the
CRTC?

One option is to drop in one of these:

As for what makes the chime, I’m not sure if it’s in the Kernal ROM or if
it’s in the Basic ROM.
You could create a custom ROM to do this. You’d have to pull the dozen or
so opcodes from a newer PET and stick them in an older one. The whole
thing isn’t simple but ultimately is doable.

So the internal speaker wasnt the same as connecting a speaker through the
c2 line?
was there a possibility to drive both speakers at the same time? or it was
just the roms that didnt support the speakers at post?
to which.. how do we hack the roms to support? A pet without the start up
sound just isnt the same.

In any case game sounds using CB2 should still work.

I don't believe it will. The smaller screened PETs, even those with
4.0 but no built in speaker do not make the beeping sound when you
connect a speaker/amp to CB2. The ROMs were slightly modified to make
the beeping sound when the FAT 40s were released with their built in
speaker.

It should. I don’t have my 2001 board working yet to test it but I’m
pretty sure it should.

Hi All
I'm not sure if I'm using this list the way it was intended, so please
let me know if my question is not appropriate.
I'm wondering if I hooked up a speaker to my 4016 Pet to the 6522 C2
line (its the older style with the main board like 2001 with no 6545),
will the startup chime come out of the speaker? It has the ROMs with
Basic 4.0.
