Hi Birders,
We explored the Maryus-Guinea loop in SE Gloucester County from 10:00am-12:00pm
today.
Highlights were 3 adult and 4 immature Bald Eagles. We had two adults and two
immatures in the our binoculars at one time - they were flying over the Mobjack
Bay. Further inland we had another pair of immature, and finally another adult
sitting on top of a nest. It was the largest Bald Eagle we've ever seen.
Other "best" birds were Acadian Flycatcher, White-eyed Vireo, Brown-headed
Nuthatch, Pine Warbler, and Seaside Sparrow.
We'd hoped to see some shorebirds so we could practice IDs before the VSO
Chincoteague trip next week-end, but due to high water levels (even though we
were there at low tide), all we got were 3 Kildeer in a field.
Overall, it was very quiet today - both bird calls and movement. We missed many
species that we've always gotten on this route, such as woodpeckers, Eastern
Bluebird, and American Goldfinch. I guess you just never know what to expect
after a storm blows through...
In any case, it was great to be outdoors on this beautiful day! Complete list
is below.
