Fellow Birders,
A bit late to the game, but things have been a bit hectic this week! Here
was some sightings from Sunday.
*Highlights*
Whitehurst Tract - 7:10 to 8:10 AM - Lack of shorebirds, with just 4
Spotted Sandpipers, a few Killdeer. Water levels rose considerably in the
impoundments due to the rains on Saturday which forced the shorebirds out
of the cell I'd been seeing them in. Killdeer were all spotted in the
northern half of the park on tilled fields. No Bobwhite calls for the 3rd
straight outing, after 3 in a row yielding them.
Pleasure House Point - 12:40 to 1:40 PM - Tricolored Herons still around,
Short-billed Dowitcher. Many folks pulled up with boats & kayaks on
sandbars so essentially no birds nearby. Hot, humid, too many people, & no
breeze made for a short outing.
Kings Grant (Ron Furnish's Yard) - 4:20 to 5:20 PM - Ron & Marie Mullins
had sighted a female Black-and-White Warbler earlier in the day and called
to let me know since I hadn't yet seen one this year in VB. When I arrived,
it took about a half hour, but the bird made an appearance in the same
tree, combing over each branch in search of food. It stayed visible for
probably 15-20 minutes before flying off to the south! 1 Mississippi Kite
also passed over on two separate occasions & could possibly be the yearling
bird that returned to the Thoroughgood area this summer. Additional:
Cooper's Hawk, Ruby-throated Hummingbird.
