Hello everyone,
On Saturday April 11th, National Audubon, Richmond Audubon and the US Fish &
Wildlife Service put on a TogetherGreen Volunteer Days event
(www.togethergreen.org<http://www.togethergreen.org/>) at the Presquile
National Wildlife Refuge in the heart of the Lower James River Important Bird
Area (IBA). This IBA has recently been recognized as continentally important
from the National IBA technical committee based on numbers of Bald Eagles and
Prothonotary Warblers that call this place home.
One hundred and fifty trees were planted along the western shoreline of the
Refuge providing a buffer zone of native trees installed within approximately
200 feet of the James River. This effort will not only encourage wildlife
corridors and ultimately shade out invasive grasses, but will also help to
stabilize the island's shoreline. In addition to the plantings, tree tubes,
stakes, vegetation retardant mats, and netting were utilized to help insure the
plant's survival and protect against predation.
