To throw in one more perspective re those hummers seen around the state:
We have kept records of first and final appearances of Ruby Throats for at
least 10 years and
had a solitary straggler appear at the feeder on Friday.
Our guess-and is it that-is that the stragglers dropping in for a fill-up
every day or so are
not the resident/breeding summer population here in eastern Spotsylvania County
but are late
migrators from north of here. They also appear to be young birds.
The latest previous appearance at our feeder was Sept. 16.
For whatever it's worth...
Further enlightenment invited.
