VA Birders,
When Bill Cross and I went birding at Fort C.F. Smith Park in Arlington
this morning (Friday), we found some new birds had arrived--probably early
migrants, since none of them breed here as far as we know. One of the first
birds
I saw at the Bird Stream was an Am. Redstart (female or immature). A short
while later, an Am. Kestrel flew across the field, being chased by a
Mockingbird. Then Bill spotted a yellowish bird near the stream. When I got
on it, I
observed that it was a tail-flicking flycatcher, the right size for an empid.,
with an eye-ring and a pretty uniform light yellowish wash on its throat,
breast, and belly. I could not think of anything it could have been except a
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, even tho it was about a month earlier than I would
expect to find one in this area. Bill and I both had short but good looks at
the
bird before it flew off and disappeared. Other highlights among the 36
species we counted this morning were a pair of Cedar Waxwings which came down
and
bathed in the Bird Stream, and both Orchard and Baltimore Orioles.
Good birding,
Val Kitchens
