As I was leaving work this evening I saw a bird frantically fly up and hit
its head near a light in the parking garage. I walked over to it, and found
that it was some sort of pigeon or dove. It was calm at first (actually, I
think "in shock" is a better term for it), but eventually it started moving
again. However, it appears to have broken its leg--it can walk/hop, but
can't fly at all, and its balance wasn't quite right... for a while it
couldn't keep its head up, but it can now...
Of course, I couldn't just leave it there, so I found a pillowcase in my
trunk and caught it. It was kind of tricky to get it without really
touching at all, but at least its reaction time was pretty slow... Anyway, I
wrapped it up (so it wouldn't struggle or attempt to fly during the drive),
and brought it home with me (to Arlington). I put it into one of my spare
birdcages for now (with a little food and water), and put it out on my
balcony. I'm not sure what to do next. Are there any wild bird rescue
groups near me? Or should I just wait and see if it improves?
Also, I'm not sure what kind of pigeon/dove it is. It has medium brown
wings with dark grey spots, a dark blue-grey tail, top of head is a lighter
blue-grey, and the face/breast is a peachish tan. Its eyes are dark, with a
light blue ring/eyelid around them. It didn't look like one of the typical
local birds, which makes me wonder if it might be a released caged bird?
Any recommendations??
