I'm an early riser, waking up usually between 3 and 4 AM. But this morning I
was tired and still asleep when a Whip-poor-will started calling its name at
5:05 AM in my back yard!!!!! Boy, did I ever get out of bed fast!
I love hearing (and keeping track of) the early-morning bird chorus, which
started with a Pewee singing as soon as the Whip-poor-will stopped at 5:11 AM.
I haven't time to list all of the birds I heard around my house as it was
getting light today, but I did want to mention that for the first time in 34
years, I'm sure I have a Worm-eating and Hooded Warbler nesting on my
property!!!!!
I've heard both birds singing close around the yard all spring, moving around
the house to proclaim territory as other birds do at this time of year. I
didn't dare think these two species would stay here, but as it's now a third of
the way through June and other migratory warblers have moved on, I do believe I
can confidently believe these are staying put on my property.
Perhaps even a bit more exciting than this realization was the discovery of a
male and female Box Turtle yesterday!!!!!! As the male was close behind the
female as they approached my Carolina Allspice shrub, I'm sure mating was going
to take place. So-o-o-o, I'm hoping to see baby Box Turtles in my yard this
year. Yes!!!!!
Sincerely,
Marlene  Â
