Hello all,
I found some nice shorebirds at a pond near my home today near New Hope in
Augusta County. Highlight was a Baird's Sandpiper, also White-rumped
Sandpiper. Lesser Yellowlegs and Least Sandpipers were also present. Allen
Larner came to see the birds and confirm the identifications.
Directions: type into mapquest or your GPS the intersection of Humbert Road
(rte. 616) and Rockfish Road (rte. 865) and from there go west on Humbert Rd.
(rte 616). Right at the junction of the 2 roads you'll notice a small green
pond on the north end of rte. 616. This is not the pond that the sandpipers
were at. Continue on Rte. 616 a little bit more and you'll notice a larger
pond on your right (north side of rte. 616). This is the pond that the
sandpipers were at. If you're coming from the other direction (from the town
of New Hope), the pond will be on your left hand side and before you get to the
intersection of the 2 roads.
Note, when I was there this morning is when all the shorebirds were there, only
the Baird's, 1 Least, and several Lesser Yellowlegs were present around 6 pm
this evening. The White-rumped and several Leasts were gone.
Good birding
