I was fortunate to be invited on a Discover the James Bald Eagle Tour on Sunday afternoon. The owner/guide, Mike, wanted to try an afternoon tour and see what the activity was like for the bald eagles. Typically, he does his eagle tours in the morning when the birds are more active. Let's just say it was an AMAZING afternoon. We left the marina at 4:30 and were scheduled to return at 6:30 but because the activity was so great, we were almost 7:15 getting back. We had at least 6 pairs of eagles and many more pairs of ospreys, blue herons, cormorants, a great horned owl that took over an osprey nest, several different ducks and gulls, and more. It was the photo trip that us photographers dream about....

The boat leaves out of Charles City or Varina and tours the James River area. There are at least 4 documented nests and pairs on the tour and as always on the river, you never know what you will see. If you are in the area, it is definitely money well spent.
