Visited Craney Island in Portsmouth this AM (8/27). Best birds were a
Buff-breasted Sandpiper mid-way along the north perimeter road, Am. Golden
Plover in the SW corner,Baird's Sandpiper (adult bird Bob),and 8 American
Avocet in the NE corner. Could not relocate my most sought after bird-
Hudsonian Godwit (reported last week). The roads are in VERY GOOD shape and no
one hassled me about driving on the dikes. Other birds included: 200+ L.
Yellowlegs, 75 G. Yellow-legs, 25 White-rumped Sandpiper, 30 Western Sandpiper,
lots of Least and Semi-palmated Sandpiper, 45 Pectoral Sandpiper, 10
Sanderling, 5 Ruddy Turnstone. 5 Black-bellied Plover, 75 Royal and 60 Caspian
Terns, Willets, and a bird I flushed from the reeds in the NW corner that
appeared to be a King Rail (I've never seen this species here before).
After leaving Craney, I swung by the Oliver-Longview Dr intersection in Isle of
Wight Co. and got good looks at the Eur. Collored-dove. The bird was seen just
north of the intersection (near Woodland Dr.) on the wires and in the corn
stubble here.
I also stopped by Hog Island in Surry Co. where I found 4 Upland and 2
Buff-breasted Sandpipers. All of these birds were in the fields ( Uppies in
the grass, Buffies in the plowed mud areas) across from the last observation
platform(the "usual spot"). There may have been more birds but I only scoped
from the roadside and did not venture into the field.
Good Birding,
