VA Birders,
This morning there were 30 species in my yard here in Buchanan County just
after sunrise. A few warbler species showed up that hadn't shown up yet this
fall. A female BLACK-THROATED BLUE came in long enough to sit nervously on a
power line and give me enough time to see her greenish back and the small white
wing patch on her primaries. For some reason this species seems to like power
lines. A female BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER was feeding in the top of the backyard
walnut tree, when not being chased by a RED-EYED VIREO. A WORM-EATING WARBLER
was also being harassed by a Red-eyed Vireo. A female BLACK-THROATED GREEN fed
in the walnut tree as well. At different times two BLUE-WINGED WARBLERS passed
through. They seemed to be intent on examining the undersides of leaves for
caterpillars. An OVENBIRD landed in a maple and took a few moments to look
around. It soon moved on. Shortly after I heard chip notes near the edge of the
yard A male HOODED WARBLER hopped into view. After seeing me he made a dive
back down into the thicker shrubs. A SCARLET TANAGER was feeding on Virginia
Creeper berries just across the road, as was a flock of 11 CEDAR WAXWINGS. An
EASTERN WOOD PEWEE was hawking insects from the lower branches of a tree.
Sometimes it nearly touched the lawn as it dived for insects. A BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHER moved about in an apple tree like a nervous spot of gray. It chose
to ignore me as it fed in the lower branches and came very close. Later, as I
worked in the yard, a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER came down to the lowest branches
of the cherry tree near the seed feeders. I think it was attracted by all of
the activity of the seed eaters. All in all it was a pretty good birding
morning, especially since I didn't have to leave the yard to enjoy it.
The entire list follows.
