I have installed a three tier bird creek in my yard and have been
overall please with it. Leaves, and pine needles, do have to be cleaned
out. I have a dripper set up on a timer to the faucet, so it keeps
itself filled with water. It was quite a chore to set up initially. I
finally ended up building a rectangular box out of 2x4 lumber and
setting in the ground with a level to set the lowest tier into.
Otherwise, I had trouble with losing a lot of water quickly because it
was not perfectly level.
It does need to be cleaned out periodically. At least once a quarter, if
not more often. I have only had it running for six months, but it seems
like there are a lot more birds using it right after I have cleaned it
out. But that is a very unscientific observation. What I am really
hoping for is lots of bird action this winter when all the natural
sources of water freeze up. It was a very wet year, so I didn't think
there would be too much of a need for water, but the birds may be more
attracted to the bird creek now that it is getting colder.
