Saturday morning ten people came out for the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy's
regular monthly bird walk at the Blue Ridge Center for Environmental
Stewardship in northwestern Loudoun County. The group visited the area at the
end of Sawmill Rd, including Butterfly Alley on the powerline and the Sweet Run
Loop. The skies stayed heavily cloudy for the entire walk with temperatures
never getting out of the mid-60's. . The highlights of the walk included a
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, and for most of the group FOS Ruby-crowned Kinglets
and three Swamp Sparrows. Five warbler species were seen including a late
Yellow Warbler observed and well-described by one of the group. As they often
do at this time of year several of the warblers and the Indigo Buntings varied
considerably in their plumage.
We also enjoyed taking a stab at identifying the many caterpillars we found
during the walk but because of the weather and time of year saw only one
butterfly, an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, an incredible contrast from the 750 we
found there in the warm drizzle during the butterfly count there in early
August.
