I report this sighting reluctantly and only for the benefit of keeping people
aware that even reasonably small tracks of marsh can sometimes hold interesting
findings. On Sunday morning, May 25th while in Fluvanna County I heard the
distinct call of kiki- kerr four times. The call was unsolicited since I was
actually looking for odonates. The habitat while containing juncus was not
overly extensive and I have seen much better opportunity in many other areas of
the state. I will presume due to the time of year, habitat and it calling that
the bird is on territory. I have had similar experience with Black Rails found
inland on territory in Raleigh, ~1978 and at Jordan Reservoir in the early
1980's.
This site will not be disclosed as no undue pressure needs to occur if indeed
breeding is being attempted.
Enjoy each day,
