VA-Birders,
I heard that another birder had observed the BLACK-HEADED GULL at the Prince
William County Sanitary Landfill near Manassas yesterday, so I went back there
today to see if I could grab some photos. After 1 1/2 hours of searching, I
finally found the bird resting with Ring-billed and Laughing Gulls on the far
hillside from where birders are expected to park. I was able to digiscope some
photos of the bird, which I am quite pleased with considering the relatively
great distance I was from the bird, and the fact that I am holding the camera
up to the scope without an adapter for now!
One of the photos can be observed at the below link. Many thanks to Larry
Meade for providing a spot on his web site to post this photo for me until I
put together my own.

Other than the Black-headed, special gulls were at a premium. Absent was the
Iceland Gull that has been seen for the last few weeks, as well as the adult
Lesser Black-backed. I probably just missed them. The GOLDEN EAGLE and COMMON
RAVEN were present, however.
One more important point: This landfill is a gemstone if you are interested
in rare gulls. Please be sure to help us retain access to the site by being
sure to park way out of the way of the equipment and workers, and thank the
staff when you enter and exit if you can. They have been very friendly thus
far.
Take Care,
Jay Keller,
Arlington
