After a 2 week absence, the White Pelican returned to balmy Accotink Bay
today, where temperatures were in the mid 60s. With black and white wings
outstretched to their full 108 inches, the bird made its long slow unflapping
descent (reminding me of a PBY Catalina Flying Boat), gently coming to a stop
on its favorite mudbar. It's in good company with about 100 Canadas and 16
Tundra Swan.
The bird's last departure on Dec. 3 coincided with a cold snap. Will it
stay until Tuesday, when the colder weather returns? We'll see!
