The bird activity was fairly subdued for the fourteen birders who came out for
the regular monthly walk at the Blue Ridge Center. However, butterflies and
other insects were numerous and kept us entertained when we were not seeing
many birds. Common Buckeyes and Monarchs were numerous and we also saw several
other butterfly species. There was insect drama as we watched a gigantic
praying mantis try to grab a wasp, but to no avail. As we walked around the
fields and trails on the Visitor Center side, we did have some avian
highlights, There were Scarlet Tanagers, many Blue Jays and Cedar Waxwings, a
high flying Northern Harrier, and a few sparrows.
