I have a bluebird nest box that has been occupied since early spring and has
already fledged three broods. About 10 days ago all the birds disappeared, and
I thought the would be gone until early winter when they general start house
hunting again. I looked out yesterday, and a male and female have returned (or
maybe never left), and are exhibiting nesting behavior again. I know bluebirds
frequently produce two broods, but isn't it rather late in the season to be
nesting again?
An interesting activity this year was that at least one young male stayed
around and helped feed the next two hatches.
