Hello all,
The posts re: dead Catbirds have been interesting. We garden as
naturally as we can and have numerous native plantings in our yard
that provide food. In addition to that, we have several water sources
for the birds. As far as I can tell, none of our close by neighbors
use a lawn service that might be a source of pesticide spray/granules.
I can't help but wonder if our very hot, so far, summer might be
contributing to the dead birds people are finding. Possibly they are
getting dehydrated, just as humans do, when out in the searing heat.
Just a thought.
Marlene Condon has a good point about gardening as naturally as
possible. We have given up asking the Master Gardener's who are
present at our weekly Farmer's Market for advice when it comes to
garden problems. Their most frequent response is to look in their
Ortho book for a chemical solution.
I hope those of you who can will provide water for the birds that
visit your property. We're having good luck as well with putting
chunks of watermelon out for them too.
Good birding,
Jay Hadlock
