I birded Lawson's Creek WMA in Halifax Co. this morning. The best find was
a flock of 9 BOBWHITES & 2 BOBOLINKS that flushed from a field edge right
under my feet. I believe the Bobwhites were a family group of 2 adults and
7 juveniles that were noticably smaller than the adults. The "mother" only
moved a few feet and started giving low clucking and squeaking sounds until
all the other birds got out of site.
Other highlights included a juvenile Baltimore Oriole, a flock of
Blue-winged Teal and a family group of Red-headed Woodpeckers (1 adult and 3
juveniles) that were very active. They were continuously calling and
scuffling with each other. 1 of the juveniles spent some time caching
willow acorns in a dead tree.
One of the White-eyed Vireos I encountered was singing a long, complex song
that included imitations of a Catbird's "meow", Scarlet Tanager's
"chip-brrr" and Summer Tanager's "pit-a-tuk".
