Eighteen people joined me for today's Sunday morning Dyke Marsh walk. The
walk occurs every Sunday at Dyke Marsh except during the Christmas Bird
Count season and is free and open to everyone. The walk began with the
group staring at a fairly quiet river except for a Double-crested Cormorant
convention being held in the channel. As we proceeded through the picnic
area, we spotted an Eastern Kingbird with nesting material and heard an
Acadian Flycatcher as well as our first of several Yellow Warblers for the
day. A Northern Flicker entered a nest cavity now occupied for three weeks.
A Magnolia Warbler briefly sang. As we entered the marina, we spotted a
Mallard hen with nine ducklings less than a week old in tow. Four swallow
species were represented at the marina. Baltimore and Orchard Orioles were
extremely vocal this morning and a female Orchard Oriole gathered nesting
material near the little wooden bridge on the Haul Road peninsula. We
observed the eagle nest from the south side of the boardwalk and tallied an
alternate plumaged Horned Grebe and two Forster's Terns on the north side.
A little humid, but a nice day.
