Hello -
Today was the last day of field work at Bridgewater College, we head into
finals next week. Highlights from our trip today, Killdeer doing the broken
wing trick and found the nest for the students to see, 2 eggs in it! We had a
Wild Turkey on the way to Leonard's Pond on Faught's Road, and Northern
Rough-winged Swallows at N. River in Bridgewater. We also had lots of
Grasshopper and Chipping Sparrows calling all over the county.
I do have some sad news for Bald Eagle aficionados. The nest right south of
Bridgewater at Spring Creek Road was hit hard a week or so ago by the awful
winds that blew through. The wind tore the nest apart, flinging the top of
nest to the ground and, very sadly, all three eaglets out to their deaths. The
farmer was distraught and called Inland Games and Fisheries who told him to
bury everything. All the remains are now disposed and unless the adults repair
and re-nest, this is a total loss for 2015. Again, very sad news to report.
