I spent about fifteen minutes outside this morning in the Annandale
area. During that time, I saw several distant hawks migrating through.
A couple were Red-tailed and one was a Sharp-shinned which was a bit
lower. The other five hawks I observed appeared to be Broad-winged,
but I could only see them as distant shapes. Fortunately, a kettle of
four new Broad-winged Hawks and three Black Vultures appeared over my
head at a much lower altitude and gave me good looks. A bit later, a
Peregrine Falcon came through low enough that I could see the pattern
on its head.
Keep looking up! BTW, I will be with the Northern Virginia Bird Club
at Occoquan Bay NWR this Saturday at 7:30.
