Kurt Gaskill's posting of Saturday's sitings included
most of what I saw at the CBBT today
(early-to-mid-afternoon). I've only lived here for a
little over 3 years, but I've never seen as many big
rafts of scoters as I did today! Thousands--and all
three species were out there. I did not see a King
Eider today, but did see 7 Common Eiders, all at
Island 2; the first-winter males are stunning! (Four
eiders and a pair of White-winged Scoters in your
scope at close range is a GOOD day). The Harlequin
Duck pair was also at Island 2.
In addition to the birds that Kurt listed, single
female Redhead, Canvasback, and Common Goldeneye were
at the islands, associating loosely with the scaup
groups (both species). As has been the case all
winter, there were no uncommon gulls -- one snoozing
Bonaparte's with red legs had me hoping for a
Black-headed, but no, there wasn't even a Lesser
Black-backed to be found. That's okay--it's always a
good day on the islands, gulls or not.
