I found the Clay-Colored Sparrow at 1:20 this afternoon [following a
futile hour & a half effort in the morning, much of it in the far
western corner of Julie Metz]. it was all alone, in the middle of the
path, foraging for over 10 minutes before flying back into the woods.
instead of back in the far corner, it was closer to the parking lot.
proceed west [back towards Rt. 1] from the parking lot, and stop &
search at the first path that intersects on the perpendicular [this is
the path that circumscribes "pod 3"]. I know others have seen the
sparrow at this intersection in recent weeks too.
other birds seen at Julie Metz were:
Black Vulture - 4
Turkey Vulture - 1
Red-shouldered Hawk - 1
Red-tailed Hawk - 3 [soaring quite high]
American Crow
Tufted Titmouse
Carolina Wren - only 1
Northern Mockingbird - 1
Field Sparrow - 1
Song Sparrow - 7
Swamp Sparrow - 2
White-throated Sparrow - 9
in the lower marsh, seen from the road
Great Black-backed Gulls - 9
Black Duck - 3
Yellow-rumped Warbler - trees at edge of road
in addition to many Ring-bills & a number of Herring Gulls
saw a killdeer at Leesylvania, along the shore under the rail-road bridge
Sunday at Burk Lake, highlights included
Ruddy Ducks - 4
Redhead - 6
rafts of all 3 mergansers [whether in the vernacular, or in technical
terms, there were rafts!! several hundred, with no species representing
less than 25% of the total]
bald eagle - 3 adults
coots - several
