All – today while checking ponds, I found 10-15 Cackling Geese mixed in with a
large flock of Canada Geese at Willow Lake (near Raphine, about 1 mile SSE of
the I-81/Raphine exit). In addition to the Cackling Geese, the 5 Greater
White-fronted Geese that have been present for a few weeks were still present.
Otherwise, only a few ducks were on the lake, which was nearly ice free. I
went over to the Brownsburg area to look for the Rough-legged Hawk. I didn’t
locate the bird, but it was seen mid-week, so it is still present. Also, Kerry
Kilday visited Locher Tract in southern Rockbridge Co (near Natural
Brige/Glasgow) and found the pair of Red-headed Woodpeckers that had nested
there this past summer.
If you are interested in photos of the Cackling Geese, I’ve up-loaded some
